Sleepy Droner Club is happy to be back at SIArts with their first exhibition of 2020 which features Dead End Green, Maps of Italy and CURRENCY ft. Rory Merola. Your hosts, AJ and Rory will be on hand as always and they appreciate your continued support.
Dead End Green is an electronic music project from Terrence O’Brien that began life as a throw away Instagram account. It has since grown into an outlet for genre-less experimentation and exploration of sound without cynicism. The debut EP ‘Mountain, Upside Down’ is available now.
Maps of Italy has four sides, but also two. It is flat, but also deep. Sometimes it sounds blue. It has been described as “containing at least one boot”. Across this landscape, modular hill forts are rhythmically connected via trade routes to the functional hinterlands. As resonant peaks give way to rolling harmonic fields, take note of the myriad sonic ossuaries found along the way.
CURRENCY is an improvisational, percussion based performance project exploring the unique rhythmic phrasing found in bass-forward electronic music such as jungle, UK garage, dubstep, IDM and techno. The brainchild of percussionist and producer Rajeev Maddela, CURRENCY aims to navigate this spectrum of genres via Ableton Live, Max/MSP and MIDI percussion triggers (Roland V-Drums and Alternate Mode’s DrumKAT DK-10), using stimulating sound design and velocity-sensitive patch programming. CURRENCY improvises entirely realized, full frequency-range tracks on the fly and without any backing tracks, freeing him to change tempos and genres at whim. CURRENCY is the state of being present.
Rory Merola is a local musician who is currently exploring and expanding their methods of creation via samplers, sequencers, synths, EMFs and occasionally homemade steel percussion. This music factotum doesn’t commit to any one style of electronic music which allows the musician to express themselves more freely. With 12 albums completed and released in 2020 alone, Merola is one of the most prolific talents around.
