Staten Island wins $10 million from Cuomo’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A section of Staten Island’s North Shore will be the beneficiary of a statewide initiative focused on revitalizing downtown areas, Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Monday morning in St. George.
Hochul made the announcement at the St. George Theatre that the borough will receive $10 million as the fourth-round winner of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative for the New York City region.
Downtown Staten Island Weekend Walk held in Tompkinsville

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Hundreds of borough residents descended on Minthorne Street in Tompkinsville on Sunday for the second-annual Downtown Staten Island Weekend Walk.
The event, which turned the street into a public plaza for the day, featured live music, an NYPD rock-climbing wall, animals from the Staten Island Zoo, outdoor dining and more.

The most eye-catching project on the North Shore of Staten Island near the ferry terminal fell apart last year but while the future of site of the New York Wheel is uncertain, its legacy is a positive one. The spotlight on what was to be the world’s largest Ferris wheel helped spur development in the Bay Street Corridor region—from St. George to Stapleton and Tompkinsville—that is bearing fruit for others.
